OK, so we started the year with a plan to edit down our blog reading and here we are on January 14th and we've already broken the rules. We have TRIED VERY HARD not to read the newish blog from fashion writer Colin McDowell, but find his unguarded sniping at the way the fashion industry works (particularly magazines) totally irresistable.
Anyone who knows fashion is familiar with Colin, who writes knowledgably for the Sunday Times (often on couture), is a constant at all the shows and has lots of books under his belt including one of my favourite fashion reads, The Pimlico Companion to Fashion (he edited it). However it's his deliciously gossipy moaning on the slipping of standards in fashion writing and editorial content that is turning the blog into our current guilty pleasure. Who is the poor newspaper editor responsible for the fashion piece he witheringly reviews here?
He has a 'bit of a go' at non-fashion trained bloggers in The Rape of the Innocents and he's right that bloggers need to watch the corrupting influence of freebies, the fashion PR industry is a canny machine that scatters presents in exchange for praise. But where magazine editors are shackled by fear of advertisers and fierce PRs, bloggers are more likely to fess up and say 'hey! I got these free! neat huh?' because they don't know better, they ARE the innocents and what's more they are very likely to say 'but they're rubbish...don't buy'. again not realising that honesty is as rare as hens teeth in printed fashion journalism. Long may the honesty last, we say.
Colin feels a little like the 'middleagemum' of the fashion industry, sighing and clucking about the way things are today, but with lots of experience and wisdom to share, we've got a soft spot for him and his blog. He is one of us, even tho' he's not a girl. Honorary membership to The Women's Room for you Col! We're sure he'll be delighted.
